Stefan De Hert MD, PhD, FESAIC, received his medical degree at the University of Antwerp, Belgium in 1984. After his anesthesiology residency training he accepted a faculty position in the Department of Anesthesiology of the Antwerp University Hospital and served as vice chairman of this Department and Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Antwerp for over 10 years. From 2007 to 2010 he acted as Professor of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Director of the Division of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. From 2011 to 2023 he was Professor of Anesthesiology at Ghent University and Head of Clinics and Director of Research at the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine of the Ghent University Hospital. Currently he is Emeritus Professor of Anesthesiology at the Department of Basic and Clinical Medical Sciences at Ghent University, Belgium.
He has authored and co-authored about 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals and many chapters in different textbooks. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Acta Anaesthesiologica Belgica and acts as regular reviewer for many major anesthesiology, cardiology and surgery journals.
Prof. De Hert acted as chair of the ESA Scientific Committee and was President of the ESA from 2017 to 2019. He is currently past-chair of the Education and Training Committee of the ESAIC and board member of the BeSARPP.
