Dr. Igor Vaz, MD, FCS, is a Urologist and Reconstructive Surgeon with over 30 years of experience. He served as director of several hospitals in Mozambique, Head of the Surgery Department, and Director of Urology Services at Maputo Central Hospital. He is Regent of Urology, teaches postgraduate urology and surgery at Eduardo Mondlane University, and is an examiner for the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA).

Dr. Vaz has advanced male and female urinary tract reconstructive surgery, complex obstetric fistula repair, total pelvic reconstruction, pediatric urology, disorders of sexual development, genitourinary feminization, and other urogynecology surgery. He has pioneered techniques for previously “incurable” cases, including fistula repair, urethral and bladder neck reconstruction, augmentation cystoplasty, neobladder, and neovagina.

He founded and leads Focus Fistula, a non-profit organization that provided to date over 1,500 free fistula and reconstructive surgeries to underprivileged patients, and serves as a training center for fistula and urogynecology. He trains health professionals across Mozambique and in Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe, and received the SIU–Albert Schweitzer International Teaching Award for his notable contributions to teaching urology in developing countries.

He is currently President of ALU (Lusophone Association of Urologists) and ISOFS (International Society of Obstetric Fistula Surgeons). More at: Dr. Igor Vaz-Bio
