Education: MD (1997), Medical Doctorate (1998), Eberhard-Karls University, Tübingen, Germany. Residency in Pediatrics and Neonatology training, University Hospitals Tübingen and Würzburg, Germany, under Prof. Dr. C.P. Speer (1999-2006). Research Fellow with Prof. Dr. Alan H. Jobe, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Ohio, USA (1999-2001).

Positions: Junior faculty member at the Faculty of Medicine, Würzburg (2006). Maastricht UMC+ (2006-present): neonatologist and leader of the experimental research group. PhD in 2007 and Professor for Experimental Perinatology since 2011. Between 2013-2022, Director of Pediatrics Research. Part-time position at the Institute for Women’s Health, University College London, UK, between 2016-2018. Clinical Professor at the University of Western Australia (2013-2023). Since 2022, Medical Director at Neuroplast BV, Maastricht, Netherlands. As of 2023, Professor of Neonatology at Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland.

Numerous national and international research awards, such as ESPR Young Researcher (2003) and the Dutch Pediatric Society (2008). Selected as "top talent" by the medical faculty (2008). Management courses at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France.

Research Interests: Stem cell therapy, Microbiome in necrotizing enterocolitis and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, development of the lungs, intestines, brain, and immune system after premature birth. Supervised 35 completed PhDs, 385 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, and 7 book reviews.

Editor: Associate editor of the journals Pediatric Research and Neonatology.
